Actual date from death registration.
In 1846 his mother married Robert PADDON, and thereafter William seems to have always been known as William Henry PADDON. Was Robert his father? I think probably not. There was over 18 months between the birth and marriage, why put the marriage off so long? On the otherhand, once born illegitimate at that time a child could not be made legitimate by their parents marrying. However, when his death was registered his father was shown as 'unknown'. It could be argued that with Robert dying when William was only aged 4, the informant, William's son George, would never have known his grandfather. It is then quite plausible he would not have known his grandfather's name. However, he knew the maiden name of his grandmother. I would have thought that if he knew that detail he would have known his grandfather's name.
