  • Name George William GREGORY
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born 14 Aug 1900  Kelbrook, Thornton-in-Craven, Yorkshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • GRO ref: Gregory, George William q3 1900 Skipton RD 9a 34; GRO online index does not show a mother's maiden name, suggesting he was illegitimate
(Skipton RD might be over the county boundary, but borders Lancashire close to where this George is known to have lived)

Details from birth registration (GRO register entry); this confirms the above is the birth that matches the date for this George in the 1939 register.

      George is shown

appears to have been a son of Emma Gregory née Lord, though probably not of her husband, alhough the latter didn't die until 1901 (after the census) and, more importantly, after George's birth. No father's name is on the cert and Emma is (wrongly) recorded as having the surname Gregory as her maiden name. It is worth noting that she had already had a child (Arthur) by a man who was not her husband, after marrying but before the birth of George, adding weight to George not being the son of her husband, Butterworth. (Whether Arthur and George shared a father I do not know).

    • John and Emma were living as man and wife at the time of the 1901 census. The reason they had not actually married may have been because Emma's husband Butterworth Gregory was still living (and divorce not readily available).
The birth of their son George William had been registered the previous year by Emma alone, who gave her true name at that time, and John was not mentioned on the registration (he would have ahd to be present for that to happen), but George was with John's mother by the time of the 1911 census.
