Maria PLANT
Set As Default Person -
Name Maria PLANT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 17 May 1817 - Date from the baptism register.
Baptised 1 Jun 1817 St. Peter’s RC Church, Cobridge, Staffordshire, England
- From register entry (image on FMP, viewed 12 Dec 2017) shows father's name as George, mother as Mary ('Marie' in Latin), 'once Dignum'. I assume this is the mother's maiden name though can't rule out that it was a previous married name. Olim is used as a description of the alternate name of all ten of the mother's on the two page spread, increasing the liklihood of it meaning maiden name, i.e. showing it wasn't just used when the mother was a widow and a former name given, but it may have been used for widow's too.
Two godparents were named, a godfather Barnas McCanney and godmother Anne White.
Gender Female Emigrated 1843 - At the same time as her sister-in-law, Sarah Gotham née Richardson.
Died Yes, date unknown Patriarch & Matriarch
Notes - (Research):With both baptism and marriage being in an RC Church and the registers in Latin I did wonder if Maria should be Mary, but the fact that the local and GRO marriage records also give her name as Maria suggests not.

However, the RC parish marriage register (image on FMP, viewed 12 Dec 2017) shows Thomas with the surname 'Gethan' so was this marriage of a Gotham or a Gethan (Gethin?)?
As well as the GRO paper index, Staffs BMD (i.e. the local copy of the index) also has Thomas as a Gotham so I think this is probably correct, especially as with it being an RC marriage the registrar would have been present at the ceremony and so the local entry is not a copy made of the PR entry. I guess it is possible that he recorded Thomas' surname wrongly at the time. Unfortunately the parish register does not include the father's names, so it is not possible to see if Thomas's name is right without purchasing a marriage certificate.
Roman Catholics mostly married other Roman Catholics, so important supporting evidence is that Thomas, who was not born into an RC family, was confirmed (with surname recorded as Gotham) in the Roman Catholic Church in 1836.
