Arthur JEFFERSON
Set As Default Person -
Name Arthur JEFFERSON Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 18 May 1841 St. Pancras, London, England
- From the 1851 census where shown as aged 10
GRO ref: JEFFERSON, Arthur q2 1841 St Pancras RD 1 250; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Bates
The baptism register shows the date of birth as 18 May 1842; clearly this is not possible, I think most likely the date and month are right and just the year wrong.
Baptised 5 Mar 1843 All Saints’ Church, Camden Town, Middlesex, England
- From PR entries (images on Ancestry, viewed 11 Oct 2017)
Camden Town church was a daughter church in the ancient parish of St. Pancras at this time, and recorded in both registers. There would be no reason for a baptism in St. Pancras Church to be recorded in Camden Town register, so we can assume the baptism was at the latter.

Notes - (Research):With his mother in all censuses, 1851-1901; should be in 1841 but none of his immediate family found in that census. Shown as married in 1891 but neither earlier or in 1901. Had he had a brief marriage that resulted in separation? I think it unlikely; only two Arthur (no middle name) Jeffersons appear to have married between 1881 and 1891, and the marriages were in Ulverston and Hull Registration Districts. After he died a brother was granted administration.

Often finding a couple in the census following the marriage clarifies the bride or groom. However, in this case it shows that Matthew was married to a mary Ann - but 3 of the 4 brides on the page were called Mary Ann!
possible brides: BATES, Mary Ann; LITTLEWOOD, Mary Ann; SMEDLEY, Mary Ann
Fortunately this marriage was in London (the area covered by the LMA) and with the records on Ancestry it is clear that Matthew married Mary Ann BATES.
