Which birth was this William Davies'?
Obviously identifying which William Davies married Hannah could be difficult, but on their marriage certificate his father was named as Moses, which at first seemed like it should be easy. In 1881 and 1901 William is shown as born in Wellington, Shropshire, but looking at censuses there was no William son of Moses born in Wellington. The closest seemed to be a William of the right age but born 'Shiffnal'. Could this be him?
In 1891 and 1911 in 'St. George's, Shropshire'. "St. George's and Priors Lee" is a civil parish in the new town of Telford. Priorslee existed as an ecclesiastical parish in 1851, and it is in this parish that the William I believe to be this one is living with his family at the time of the census, although in the civil parish of Shifnal and William is shown as born in Shifnal. St. George's Church was not built until 1861-2; I guess that where William was born and lived then became part of that parish and the area known as St. George's, hence William using this as his birthplace. In fact, although the family are still shown as born Shifnal, and in St. Peter's parish, in 1861, the road, street etc. column in the census shows 'St. George's'. Wellington seems to be an approximation to the nearby town; there seems to be no church or region of Wellington known as St. George's.
In addition, William's marriage certificate shows his father was a miner; the census records him as an ironstone miner.
Hence I think we can conclude it was the William shown in the census as born in Shifnal who was this William who married Hannah.

Hannah seems to have separated from her first husband, Thomas Pugh, as at the time of the 1881 census she was shown as married, but head of the household, Thomas not being present. However, with her and her daughter was a lodger - William Davies. Perhaps Thomas had died by 1885, allowing William and Hannah to marry, though she would have been expected to have remarried as Hannah PUGH, not Hannah Pugh GOTHEN. With a name as common as Thomas PUGH it is hard to know.
