John GOTTOM

-
Name John GOTTOM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Gender Male Died Yes, date unknown Notes - Named as father when his son William married. However, his occupation is shown as 'unknown'. I suspect this means John died when William was too young to remember him. Whilst those who were illegitimate sometimes created a father for decency on certificates, I think someone who had invented a name for a father, would then also invent an occupation for him, so I suspect John did exist. Of couse it is possible that William was illegitimate but had been told his father had been one John Gotham but not been told his occupation.
John could well be a grandson of Samuel Gottam, or even his son John.
