    Notes
    • I am interested in how Emily was related to Samuel George Gotham as she was shown as niece in household of which he was the head in 1861. If niece was both accurate, and being used as we use it it would imply that she was the daughter of a sibling of Samuel, i.e. probably of a Gotham - unless Samuel's mother had had a child before she married his father.
Between Samuel and niece Emily was Samuel's aunt Harriet Hartley. 'Niece' should represent the relationship to the head of the household, but could be to the previous named, i.e. to Samuel's aunt, and niece was sometimes used in past a little vaguely, for a female relation in a younger generation.

Although shown as aged 11 and born Midhurst in the 1861 census, there is only one birth registration of an Emily Housome to fit this, and she appears to have been baptised in Woolbeding, which is in Midhurst Reg District, the daughter of George and Hannah. The baptism register shows George and Hannah also had a daughter Eliza baptised in 1845.
In the 1851 census, I cannot find an Emily to match but there is a George and Harriet in Woolbeding with daughters Ellen (aged 5 i.e. born about 1845 in Woolbeding) and Eliza (aged 1 i.e. born about 1849 in Woolbeding). There are no birth registrations to match Ellen and Eliza, so I suspect the names were wrongly recorded and should be Eliza and Emily. Further evidence of a link is that George and his family were living as a separate household but in the same house as Samuel's uncle James Hartley and his wife.
Was Harriet similarly wrongly recorded and her name was really Hannah? While this would seem possible she was again recorded as Harriet in the 1851 census, making it less likely. It does not appear, though, that George had been widowed and remarried. Just to make it more confusing, the only marriage I could find at first that was a good fit for George Hounsome, (in Midhurst RD in Q1 1844 - fine) was to a Mary! However, another George was married the next quarter, recorded as Hownsome, a spelling that escaped my wildcard / phonetic searches. That shows he was married to a Harriet Hartley. Harriet was shown as aged 26 in 1851 and born Bepton; looking for a baptism to fit the only ones seems to be for a 'Harriett' baptised in Bepton on 20 Feb 1825 - who was the daughter of James and Anne!
In other words, in 1851 George and Harriet and their daughters were in the same house as Harriet's parents.

Back to the relationships: Emily was not the niece of Samuel, but his 1st cousin once removed, but Emily was great niece to the Harriet Hartley after whom she was listed in the census.
