- From PR entry (image on DFHS website, members pages )
"3 Edward Gotham & Charitye Preston were maried the 23 day of June" - under heading 'Mariages Anno Dom 1633.'
In 1632 one Richard Preston got married in Abbotskerswell, and was described as the sonne in law of John Dyer. As son-in-law then included the meaning step-son it seems Richard's mother had married John Dyer. A John Dyer had married Sibley Preston in Abbotskerswell in 1616, described as widow and widower: these would seem to be Richard's mother and step-father. At the time of the 1616 marriage Sibley was described as of Dartington. A Richard and SIbley had had a son Richard baptised in Dartington in 1601. Was Charity a sister of Richard? Yes, they had also had a daughter 'Cheritye' baptised in 1605/6.
In marrying Charity, therefore, Edward would seem to have been marrying his first wife's step-sister.Although marrying a deceased wife's sister was prohibited, and I think this prohibition would have applied to a deceased wife's half-sisters, there was no restriction on marrying step-sisters let alone a previous wife's step-sister.
