Maybe it was because John was not settled in the town (if he wasn't).

It would seem to be this Mary who married John Eales. It's more likely she was just 3 or 4 years older than 10 years older (the only other Mary I think could have married John was baptised in 1752). Age at death is not totally conclusive: shown as 83 when this Mary would have been 81, but the other 87!
