Joan JARMAN
Set As Default Person -
Name Joan JARMAN Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Bef 16 Mar 1613/14 - born before her father wrote his will
Gender Female Bequest 22 Nov 1615 In the will of her father William - Possibly the main beneficiary of her father's will - although without knowing the size of the residue it is not possible to compare with her mother's inheritance.
What Joan was to inherit depended on whether her mother was pregnant when the will was written; not surprisingly she would get less if there was a sibling or two who would also inherit. It seems almost certain there were no siblings to reduce her inheritance. There are no baptisms in the BTs for 1613 or 1614, so they would have had to have been baptised in 1615. It is unlikely that a child conceived by 16 Mar 1613/14 would have been baptised that late.
This being the case Joan would have inherited:
- a house with its ground and appurtenances in 'Chilson' (probably Chivelstone) - though with her mother having a lifetime interest in this house just 4/- a year while her mother lived;
- £100 at the age of 10;
- 'a beaker of silver parcell gilt and Sixe silver spoones'.
With her mother remarrying it is unlikely Joan benefitted at a later date (if she lived so long) from the residue of the estate that her mother inherited; if it wasn't spent in their life time it is more likely that her step-father would have ensured that his children, Joan's half siblings, were the beneficiaries.

Other Partners: Andrew GOTHAM m. Abt Feb 1615/16Married Bef 16 Mar 1613/14 - Since William left a will proved in 1615 from which it can be seen he was of Cockington and left a young wife Elizabeth I think that this was probably the Jarman (German) to whom Elizabeth was married before she married Andrew Gotham.
A Court of Chancery case in 1632 (ref. C 2/ChasI/G1/25) confirms that Elizabeth's husband before she married Andrew was William Jerman (transcription started, will be added when complete).
The only child mentioned in William's will is Joan. The BTs survive for the years 1612 to 1614, and do not include the baptism of Joan or another child of William, but it is possible there was another born in 1615 or posthumously in 1616, years for which neither PRs nor BTs survive.
Similarly, marriages in Cockington PRs only survive from 1632, and while BTs for most years around this time have been lost, those for 1612-14 survive, but do not contain the marriage of William Jarman to Elizabeth (images on FS browsed).
(no marriage licence for the marriage in 1612 or 1613 NS in Vivian; have yet to look earlier)

The will of William Jarman (d. c. 1615)
Of interest because his widow subsequently married one Andrew Gotham
