The Rev. John WILDBORE
Set As Default Person -
Name John WILDBORE Prefix The Rev. Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1482 - Assuming he was appointed as Vicar of Willesborough in 1540. Whilst people may retire for a variety of reasons at any age, the fact he retired in 1557 does suggest he was probably 'feeling his age' at that time, and somewhat older than 42, i.e. born somewhat before 1515.
Gender Male Occupation From 22 Sep 1540 to 26 Nov 1545 Willesborough, Kent, England
Vicar - From the CCEd website
This shows that he was Vicar on 22 Sep 1540, but he could have been appointed before that date.
The fact that a John Wildbore became Vicar of Preston in 1545, the same year that a John Wildbore resigned as Vicar of Willesborough, suggests it was the same John.
Occupation From 23 Jun 1545 to 1557 Preston next Wingham, Kent, England
Vicar - Date from footnote about John in the article about Vicars of Minster in
Archæologia Cantiana (see below).
(more details on the CCEd website)
Occupation From 7 Feb 1549/50 to 1557 Minster in Thanet, Kent, England
Vicar - An article in Archæologia Cantiana (vol. 25, p.104, PDF p.9, pub. 1902) listing the vicars of Minster shows that John Wilbore was instituted on 7 Feb 1549/50 following the death of the previous Vicar, Seth Travis (citing Reg. Cranmer, f. 410b).
A footnote for this entry gives the following additional information:
"Archibishop Cranmer's Register furnishes the information that on 23 June 1545 John Wyldebore, alias Dygon, S.T.B., was admitted to the perpetual vicarage of Preston by Wingham; and Cardinal Pole's Register tells us that he resigned that benefice in 1557, in which year he also retired from Minster. On 3 Septemberhe obtained permission from the Archbishop to negotiate with his successor respecting an annual pension for himself, which was to issue from the fruits of the vicarage."

Court 24 Apr 1551 In the Court of the Archdeacon of Canterbury - As Vicar of Minster John brought an action for unpaid tithe against Matthew Griffin of the same parish, and also against William Poley and Edward Long. (from Archæologia Cantiana, vol. 28, p.76 - PDF p.3)
Also known as John DYGON Died Aft 1557 - Resigned from his livings in 1557.

Notes - (Research):** I don't know how John was related to my Wildbore ancestors, or even if he was related, ** but it seems probable. It is not a very common name and a coincidence otherwise that he should be Vicar of Minster when my ancestors were there. Chicken or egg? - was there glebe land with his position which he leased to his brother or related in some other way, or did he obtain the benefice because he had relations in Minster?
It is clear that there was more than one priest in Kent called John Wil(d)bore in the C16th. Some sources have assumed different events as referring to the same person which may be correct, but for which the evidence is not obvious to me. Some have assumed the same person where it is quite clear this cannot be the case.
John the Vicar of Minster resigned in 1557, and from Preston in the same year. It seems safe to assume the two vicarages were held by the same John.
However, the reference to John the Vicar of Minster in Archæologia Cantiana, vol. 28, p.76 provides a footnote to the article in Archæologia Cantiana, vol. 18, p.449, referring to John the Master of Cobham Hall, where a list of offices held is given which date from 1515 to 1552 and include the Prebend of Rochester Cathedral. It is clear that John who was the Prebend cannot have been the Vicar of Minster and of Preston. John the Prebend wrote a will in 1551, proved in 1553, so he must have died between the two dates. The will includes "I John Wilbore, Clerke, and one of the Prebendaries of the Colledge of Rochester"; whilst no other positions are mentioned thre are several references to Strode, and it seems safe to assume he had been the Master of Strood Hospital. CCEd shows there was a vacancy in Chiselhurst in 1552 following the death of the Rector, John Wilbore, so it seems safe to assume that was a position held by John the Prebend; in any case, it cannot have been the John who became Vicar of Minster.
