- Shown as aged 52 in the 1901 census and 49 when she married Matthew Gotham in 1897, suggesting a birth about 1848, but tracing her back through the censuses she had clearly lost a few years. The earliest in which she appears, the 1851 census, seems almost right in giving her age as 6, although with her birth registered in the first quarter of 1844 and census night being 30th March she would have to have both been born on 31st March and had her birth registered on the same day if this were to be accurate.

Born before her mother and father or step-father married, it is not clear if Edward Dews was her biological father. She was named as Mary Ann Dews, and described as his daughter in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (the only two in which they were in the same house on census night) and named him as her father when she married Matthew Gotham, but all of her children's births were registered with her maiden name recorded as Gardner.
