His death was reported in the Staffordshire Advertiser of 8 August, 1863 (p. 5, col. 2, under 'Hanley'):
"Fatal Accident at the Hanley Goods Station. - James
Keeling, a man employed as day watchman at the Hanley
goods station of the North Staffordshire Railway, was killed
on Saturday evening through an act of his own imprudence,
which it is to be feared is sadly too common. The unfortu-
nate man had finished his work, and as one of the porters
was engaged in tying a sheet on the last waggon, instead of
going round, he attempted to cross the line between the
waggons. The engine driver could not see the deceased, so
that on the train slightly moving he was caught between
the buffers of two carriages, and was so crushed that he
died instantly. He is said to have been quite sober at the
      time."

May have had a daughter Clara who was born and died in 1855. Her birth registration (entries in indexes) show that her mother's maiden name was Gotham, but I think it more likely that she was the daughter of George Keeling who had married Ann Gotham.
