Charles GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Charles GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 16 Aug 1816 - Date from baptism register
Baptised 8 Sep 1816 Wesleyan Methodist, Lower Street, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, England
Gender Male Occupation 1836 Potter - At the time of his marriage
Died 8 Mar 1839 The Infirmary, Stafford, Staffordshire, England
Cause: Scrofula [TB] - Although there is a burial of a Charles GOTHAM in q1 1839, there is no entry in the death registration index under this name. Looking at the Stafford Reg District GRO index for Charles deaths that quarter finds the following:
GRO ref: Gethin, Charles q1 1839 Stafford RD 17 104
Details from death registration (GRO register entry)
The same Charles or a co-incidence?
Looking for this same death in the local BMD index finds the following, showing he was the same age as the one buried:
Local BMD (Staffs index for 1821): GETHIN, Charles aged 21 sub-district: Stafford, registers at: Newcastle-Under-Lyme, ref: STD/01/435
With the match on age as well it seems too much to be co-incidence and I think the burial and death registration are for the same person. The question then is was it for a Gotham or a Gethin?
Since this Charles seems to have died before his wife remarried in 1846 and there is no other death registration found for him points to the death being of a Gotham, not a Gethin. In addition, he died in hospital and the informant was the hospital's house surgeon, not a family member, but the family may well have been at the burial, so I think the name is more likely to be correct in the burial register.
His death at this times also fits in well with what we know of his family. His last child was born in 1838, and his birth in July that year and the death of another son in Dec 1838 both took place in a workhouse. The family being in a workhouse in 1838 may well have been due to Charles' final illness rendering him unable to work and hence unable to provide for his family. In 1831 his widow seems to be back with her parents and siblings. All of this would make sense if Charles ahd died in 1839.
The GRO death register entry also shows Charles as a potter, which fits this Charles. Whilst the date given there, 8 Mar, seems unlikely for a burial on 23 Mar, the entry also shows the date of registration was 22 Mar. A burial did not generally take place until a death was registered, so the registration date does suggest it is the right death registration. It is not clear why there would have been a two week delay in registering the death, or maybe there wasn't, perhaps there was an error made in the date of death when 1st recorded or when the GRO copy was made.

"Charles Gotham No. 1673, abode: from the Infirmary Stafford, buried: March 23d, age 21, ceremony performed by: R Temple Curate"
I can't find another Charles who could have been buried at this time, plus his wife appears to have remarried in 1846, so it does appear to be the burial of this Charles.
The age given in the burial register is 21; this Charles would have been 22 so very close.
His abode is given as 'From the Infirmary, Stafford'
