"Gotham - On the 8th inst., at Lower Huntly, Sand-
hurst, of hydatid on the liver, after protracted
suffering, nobly endured, Mary Reid, aged twenty-
seven years, the beloved wife of Thomas Gotham,
of Liverpool, and daughter of the late Archibald
Cousland, of Glasgow, deeply regretted by all who
knew her."
(The Argus published Melbourne, Victoria; Tuesday 13 February 1866)
Hydatid disease is caused by the canine tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus. The adult worm is tiny, just 5 mm long, with a scolex (head) and 2 or 3 proglotids, which contain the eggs. These proglotids are transmitted to humans from ingestion of food contaminated with canine faeces. When the eggs hatch the young migrate to a variety of tissues, but most commonly as in Mary's case the liver (52-77%), where they form multilayered cysts where the adult stage develops. Various symptoms can result, both from the mass and from rupture if that occurs; in particular rupture can lead to anaphylaxis. In pregnany rupture is more likely and hydatid disease in pregnancy can also lead to intrauterine growth restriction and to the baby being born pretmaturely.
As a young woman it seems quite likely that Mary was pregnant and that it was the pregnancy that caused her hydatid disease to become more serious resulting in death. Thomas and Mary seem to have had no children, although married for over 6 years. Maybe he was away at sea a fair bit of this time, but it also seems possible that the cyst might have caused miscarriage or babies born prematurely who didn't survive the birth process and who consequently do not appear in the records.

Described as 'of Liverpool' when his wife died, and this Thomas died like Mary in Victoria (parent's names at death registration show this), hence I am confident the marriage was this Thomas. (Also, no further records for him in England)
