    • The family were clearly prospering at this time, since as well as John and Susan and their 7 children and a neice (13 year old scholar, Emma F Moalle) they had 3 domestic servants living in - one general (22 year old Dawlish born Elizabeth Murch), a governess (26 year old Jane Green born at Cranbrook in Kent) and a nurse maid (local girl Emily Farley, aged 13).
Two indoor farm servants were also living in the farmhouse, probably relations of nurse maide Emily: 50 year old Thomas Farley and 13 year old William H Farly [sic]; since Thomas was recorded as unmarried he appears not to have been the youngsters' father.

Despite, or maybe because of, the presence of a governess only son William and neice Emma were shown as scholars. Did this imply they were at a school and only the younger children were being taught by the governess?
