George Halliwell GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name George Halliwell GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 14 Jul 1900 Liverpool, Lancashire, England
- About July 1900 from the 1901 census where shown as aged 8 months; actual date from 1939 register, also from Royal Irish constabulary service record and baptism register.
GRO ref: Gotham, George Halliwell q3 1900 W. Derby RD 8b 462; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Caddick
Baptised 5 Aug 1900 St. Chad’s Church, Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Mar 2019)
Gender Male Middle name relationship Clearly a surname, but I've found no clue where this is from - possibly a friend Military Service WW1 - George was in the army at some time prior to 1920, at least during part of WW1, as there is a medal card for him and as it was returned veterans that the British goverrnent targeted in 1920 when recruiting to reinforce the Royal Irish Constabulary, which had been much reduced and demoralised by the Irish War of Independence.
(Royal Irish Constabulary service record, which shows him as 'Carter, Ex Soldier')
Also known as George TINSLEY Occupation Bef 1920 Carter - (Royal Irish Constabulary service record, which shows him as 'Carter, Ex Soldier')
Occupation From 28 Sep 1920 to 2 Feb 1922 Roscommon, Co. Roscommon, Ireland
Royal Irish Constabulary - His service record shows he was transferred to Roscommon on 29 Oct 1920.
It also shows he was recommended by 'R.O. Liverpool' which I think must mean 'Recruiting Officer in Liverpool'. His native county was shown as Lancashire, and his dob 14 July 1900. His height was 5 ' 7½''. His time in the constabulary ended when the constabulary was disbanded, having served for 1 year and 4 months, earning £234 pensionable pay and so a pension of £50-14-0 was recommended.
(Royal Irish Constabulary service record, which shows him as 'Carter, Ex Soldier')
Wikipedia article about the Royal Irish Constabulary.
(I'm showing Roscommon as meaning the town, but it could mean the county).
Occupation 1924 Coachman - At the time of his marriage
Residence 1939 9, Ancroft Road, Huyton, Lancashire, England
- With his wife and two children in the 1939 register.
By the time of the 1939 register his parents had 3 children aged 8 to 14. Old enough to have left school and been out at work, may have been a live-in domestic or similar, but I can't be sure.
In addition, the first entry in the household is closed, apparently accidentally instead of his son as the transcribed details on FMP are for this George not his son.

Details from PR (transcribed data on Lancashire OPC website
This shows the brides name as Ellen, as does transcribed data on FamilySearch. I am sure the name was Ellen, as there is a death of an Ellen Gotham, but no re-marriage or death of an Eileen.
There is also a birth to fit, in 1898, in Liverpool RD. The only registration of a birth of an Eileen Hanna, 1890-1910, was in 1910, in West Derby RD. Although this is the right area it is extremely unlikely she would have married aged just 14. Also a birth in 1898 is in accord with the dob in the 1939 register, where shown as Ellen, and the family of this Ellen include father John, as named at marriage, and a sister Rosanna, and a Rosanna Hanna was a witness to the marriage.
