"A Man Drowned. - John Gotham an old man aged seventy-seven, met with his death on Monday evening by falling into the lock on the Trent and Mersey canal, Etruria Vale. The old man was short sighted, and he is supposed to have fallen into the lock while on his way to an adjoining shop to purchase some tobacco. , d. 9 Apr 1875, Stone Reg Dist, Staffordshire, England
(Age ~ 69 years) Married 5 Oct 1835 St. Michael and St. Wulfad’s Church, Stone, Staffordshire, England
- The age and birthplace in the censuses clearly show that the John who was married to Mary was the one baptised in Hinstock in 1801.
A William fitting the one born to John and Hannah was with Mary at the time of the 1841 census, as well as other children born before his marriage to Mary, so it seems fairly safe to assume he had previously been married to Hannah, and the other earlier children were theirs.
