  • Name Richard GOTHAM
    Prefix Mr.
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1578
    • Rough estimate based on estimate of wife's date of birth
    Gender Male
Residence Between 1610 and 1623  East Allington, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Daughters were baptised in East Allington in 1609/10 and 1615/16 at least, and another described as 'of East Allington' on a marriage licence in 1623, suggesting Richard was probably living in the parish between these dates at least.
Rate 1613  Abbotskerswell, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Poor rate
    • A list of those paying the poor rate in 1613 includes 'Judeth and Richard her sonne' amongst the 33 names (29 entries, including 4 joint entries of a parent and son)
(from Somers Cocks 'Abbotskerswell Devon', p.40; I have not yet looked at these parish records for myself)
    Died Between 1615 and 1640
    • Between baptism of a daughter and his wife paying the Abbotskerswell poor rate, as a widow (the earliest surviving poor rate for Abbotskerswell is 1640, by which time Richard's wife was a widow; the earliest churchwarden's account is not until 1663).
    Property Bef 1636
    Land sold to Christopher Brooking
    • In his will, written 15 Mar 1636, one Christopher Brooking, a merchant of Totnes, left in a bequest to his son William
"all the Landes purchased by mee of Richard Gotham ...". Just before this he had bequeathed lands to his son John, describing their location, but unfortuantely there is no indication of where this land was.
      (TNA ref: PROB 11/170/386)

I can't be sure it was this Richard who sold the land but it seems most likely. I am not aware of many living in the early C17th (though there could be others of whom I am unaware). This Richard was clearly from a family better off than most Gothams (I think the only Gotham apart form the Morchard Bishop family given the appellation 'Mr' in a PR entry).

    Married
    • Without Penelope's baptism there was no clear evidence that the Richard having children in East Allington was the husband of Susan who was linked to Whiddon in Abbotskerwell.
Penelope's baptism shows that Richard and Susan were married to each other. The baptism was outside the usual Gotham area, but in an area with which Richard had a family link through the Coles - his maternal grandmother was Margaret Cole and she appears to have inherited land in Buckland Toutsaints, a small parish adjoining East Allington.

This link of Richard to the area makes me confident it was this Richard who was the father of Penelope / husband of Susan.
