Sarah PUDDICOMB
Set As Default Person -
Name Sarah PUDDICOMB Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1722 - Estimated from date of marriage. Of Bovey Tracey at the time of her marriage, possibly born there.
The indexes contain no baptism of a Sarah Puddicomb in Bovey Tracey in 1720 +/- 10 years, including looking at all Sarahs in the index whose surname has the 'gis' of Puddicomb.
There were two Puddicomb families having children there at this time: Hugh and Richard. It seems probable Sarah was a daughter of one of these, though she could have moved to the parish from elsewhere; there were other families in neighbouring parishes (though again no Sarah to fit). Copies of the will of Hugh survive, along with other papers concerning his family - hopefully these will clarify if Sarah was his daughter. One of his children was called Deanna, a name given by Sarah and her husband to one of their children - was this after Sarah's sister?
There is a gap between Hugh's children baptised in 1721 and 1725 during which Sarah could easily have been born and baptised. (There is one entry in 1723 squeezed in, clearly not entered at the right time).

"Jan the 30th. were Marryed John Gotham & Sarah Puddicm."
It would seem highly probable that this was the same John and Sarah who subsequently had children baptised in Topsham and Littleham, John no doubt moving due to his work. Such movement was quite common; possibly John felt his job opportunities were better based on the Exe.
There is a surprising long gap between the marriage and first child. I have browsed the Littleham and Topsham registers for this period; there are no other children that could be theirs. Possibly the gap due to John being away from home much of the time on long voyages, but looking at St. Marychurch register some pages are not intact and for the odd entry the crucial information may be missing. There is one entry in 1750/1:
"Jan 3 was [Bap]tized Mary the daughter of John [missing]" - could this be a daughter of John and Sarah?
