    • Why was a son given the middle name Gotham?
      I think it must have been from Harriet's side of the family, as her husband was from Chichester.
      Harriet seems to have grown up with her grandfather John Scott and his wife Ann. John was born in Coldridge, a parish quite near Morchard Bishop, Ann in Lapford, a parish adjoining Morchard Bishop.
      I suspect, therefore, that the connection was through the Morchard Bishop Gothams.
