James GOTHAM-POTTER
Set As Default Person -
Name James GOTHAM-POTTER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 27 Mar 1893 New Zealand
- From NZ index of historical BMD registrationsGave the birth date of 27 Mar 1892 when he enlisted as James Goatham GILMOUR in WW1. I am guessing date and month right but year wrong.
A birth in 1893 is consistent with the age given at his death, so probably not a late registration.
Gender Male Middle name relationship Gotham: his paternal grandmother's maiden name - Also the middle name of his father.
Although James birth and marriage records, judging from the indexes, show him as James Gotham POTTER he seems to have changed his name to James GOTHAM-POTTER, and so his descendants have the surname GOTHAM-POTTER rather than POTTER as a surname and Gotham as a popular choice of middle name, as amongst his siblings children. His wife too became a Gotham-Potter; it is with this surname her death was registered and she was buried.
Misc. 1917 Father of unborn child - The following appeared in the Evening Star, Issue no. 16542, 29 Sep 1917, p. 6:
"THE COURTS - TO-DAY
CITY POLICE COURT.
(Before J. R. Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.)
Affiliation Order.— James Gotham Potter was proceeded against on a complaint tor an affiliation order in respect to an unborn child.— Mr Irwin appeared for the complainant, and said that the defendant was engaged on a steamer. He understood that both the parties were agreeable to marry but his client wanted security fixed.— Defendant said he could obtain security, but offered to marry the girl this morning "if it made any difference".-A formal order by consent was made, defendant to find security in the amount of £100. If in the meantime the parties mutually arranged matters regarding marriage, the security, of course, need not be obtained."

Am I right to think that Joseph, shown at baptism as Joseph John POTTER was the Joseph Goatham POTTER who married in New Zealand in 1882?
From the marriage register entry the parents are right but the age is wrong. The age given in the marriage register suggests he was born about 1847, though the age at death registration suggests about 1842, so halving the discrepancy with the true date.
I think Joseph was lying about his age, to make the difference between him and his wife not so great.
It is possible that Joseph John, son of William and Ann, died and that they had another they named Joseph Gotham POTTER. However, for this to be the case 3 things seem to be missing: the burial of the first Joseph, the baptism of the 2nd and the birth registration of the 2nd. It is highly unlikely all three would be missing / mistranscribed. Hence I do believe this Joseph is the son born in 1836.
