Richard JOHNS
Set As Default Person -
Name Richard JOHNS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Between 1802 and 1810 Cornwall, England
- Place of birth simply shown as 'Cornwall' in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses and 'Cornwall n.k.' in 1851. 'n.k.' stands for 'not known': Richard appears not to have known where he was born!
His age is also somewhat uncertain, as he was shown as aged 41 in the 1851 census, suggesting born 1809 or 10, 55 in 1861, suggesting 1805 or 6, and 68 in 1871, suggesting born 1802 or 3.
Gender Male Occupation 1844 West Teignmouth, Devon, England
Miner - There is plenty of information about mines higher up the Teign Valley, between Dunsford and Hennock, but I haven't discovered what mining Richard might have been doing in Teignmouth. Maybe there were some explorations that never came to much. I have seen the nearby clay described as being mined, but in all other references I have seen to those who extracted this they were described as 'clay cutters'.
Richard's subsequent work as a miner seems to have been in the mining areas of Cornwall. Was he really resident in West Teignmouth at the time of his marriage, or did he just use an abode their for convenience?
If he was mining in Teignmouth it did not take him long after his marriage to return to Cornwall.
Occupation From 1851 to 1861 Cornwall, England
Miner Occupation 1871 Ag. lab. Died Mar Q 1875 Plympton Reg Dist, Devon, England
- * Probable death - not certain *
I suspect his death was this one:
GRO ref: Johns, Richard q1 1875 aged 72 Plympton RD 5b 212
Both the age and place are consistent with the 1871 census - shown as aged 68 there, and in St Budeaux, which was in Plympton RD.
There was also a 69 year old whose death was registered in Plymouth RD in q3 1871 - could be this Richard if he was not at home when he died, or the family may have moved a little.

This shows that Richard was a widower when he married, of full age, father Samuel Johns, a miner.
