Martha COLLINGS
Set As Default Person -
Name Martha COLLINGS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1705 - estimated from date of husband's baptism
Gender Female Died Nov 1792 Buried Nov 1792 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Feb 2020)
"[November] 17th Martha Gotham - [Affidavits Brought] the 22nd"
or
"[November] 19th Martha Gotham - [Affidavits Brought] the 22nd"
Was the burial of one Martha entered twice in the register, or was the other entry the other Martha Gotham (i.e. née Harris)? I think probably the latter, especially as it appears that the date the affidavits were brought was written in afterwards, and so if the two entries referred to one person it would seem probable it would have been noticed and corrected then.
Since this Martha Gotham (née Collings) appears to have had only one child, who died young and unmarried, it seems quite possible she would have been cared for in her old age by her husband's nephew and his wife - the latter being the other Martha Gotham (née Harris). A string of burials 16-19th Nov may reflect several people succumbing to an infectious disease, and as one of the others was a Harris she may have been part of or in close contact with the same household as that in which one or both Martha's lived.

Family John GOTHAM, bap. 22 Feb 1703/04, St. Bartholomew’s Church, East Ogwell, Devon, England
, d. Abt 1771, (possibly), At Sea
(Age ~ 66 years) Married 5 Jan 1726/27 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 2014)We can't be certain that it was John, son of Humphrey and Sybilla, who married in West Teignmouth. It seems probable that the two brothers Thomas and John, sons of Humphrey and Sybilla, who disappear from the East Ogwell registers were the same Thomas and John who appear in the Teignmouth (mainly West Teignmouth) registers. When there were too many in the rural parishes for the work available in them, a natural move in Devon, especially for those near the coast, was to move there.
