    • Almost certainly the John Gotham of 'West Teingmouth' who left a will proved in 1771 (believed to survive only as a list item)
Died Abt 1771  (possibly), At Sea See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • If I am right and it was this John who left a will proved in 1771 then he probably died shortly before that - most likely the same year.
There is no burial record so ** I am guessing ** that he died at sea.
(Whilst it is said that probate when a death was at sea had to be through the PCC, a grant of probate was made in the Consistory Court in Exeter for Nicholas Gotham in 1604, despite him drowning on a herring voyage. I gather that coastal waters were exempt)

    • From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 2014)We can't be certain that it was John, son of Humphrey and Sybilla, who married in West Teignmouth. It seems probable that the two brothers Thomas and John, sons of Humphrey and Sybilla, who disappear from the East Ogwell registers were the same Thomas and John who appear in the Teignmouth (mainly West Teignmouth) registers. When there were too many in the rural parishes for the work available in them, a natural move in Devon, especially for those near the coast, was to move there.
