    • I seems clear that it was this Patience whose banns were read but who didn't get married at this time.
There were banns read at St. George's Church, Exeter beginning just over a month from the last reading of these for a John Angel Riddels to marry one Mary Ann Hore! Sometimes more than one person could have an unusual name like this, if for example they were cousins both named ater their grandfather. However, these other banns also shown John as a Private in the 3rd. Regmt. of Foot Guards. Even cousins wouldn't be likely to be in the same regiment at the same time.
I guess he had been making promises to more than one young woman attracted, Bathsheba Everdene-like, to a dashing young Guard, in order to have fun with them while stationed in Exeter.
Whether he married Mary Ann I don't know, but I suspect it was the same John Angel Riddells who married Honour Chubb in Tavistock in 1821. (I suspect there was no marriage to Mary Ann - a quick check and there is no burial on FMP, which with the DFHS index cover most burials in Devon for this period). Possibly Honour was his true sweetheart all the time; he had been baptised in Plymouth Presbyterian Church in 1791, close enough that their paths may have crossed before he joined the army.

(* both John and Patience were shown as of the parish of St. John Exeter so any marriage should have been there; at the time of adding this, the banns but not the marriage records for this parish and date are on FMP; the situation is the same for St. George Exeter).
Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry
