Mary Ann JUDE
Set As Default Person -
Name Mary Ann JUDE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1764 - based on date of marriage and of husband's baptism; compatible with the baptisms (i.e. probably close to the births) of her children
Gender Female Residence 1809 Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
- Mary had a room in the house of Robert Barker. Sarah Peach, who stole from her, had lodged with her, as I raed the Old Bailey proceedings they had shared a room.
Mary said "... she had lodged with me in the same house", while in her defence Sarah said "I paid the rent, and my prosecutor found coals and candles".
I think Great Sutton Street is where Mary was living when a Bible was stolen from her. In her witness statement, as recorded, she said 'Sutton Street'. I have not found evidence of Great Sutton Street ever having been so named, but it is clear there was for a while a Little Sutton Street (now renamed to Northburgh Street), so it is possible the prefix 'Great' was added to aid in distinguishing between them. Great Sutton Street was in the south-east corner of Clerkenwell St. James' parish, i.e. close to the border with 'Old Street St. Luke's', the parish in which her husband was buried.

Bible stolen from her by Sarah Peach - In 1809 a Bible was stolen from a widow Mary Gotham, who I think must have been this Mary.
A calendar of Newgate Prisoners shows that Sarah Peach was committed on the oath of Mary and others, for stealing a Bible and other articles belonging to Mary. Sarah was tried at the Old Bailey on 17th April, 1809, found guilty and sentenced to one year in the House of Correction, and fined one shilling.
Newgate Calendar entry:
36 Sarah Peach, 33, committed by J. Turton, Esq. on oaths of Mary Gotham, and others, for stealing a bible, and other articles, her property. Dated March 9, 1809.
There were too many Sarah Peachs for me to be sure of her origin and fate, at least without extensive research, for which I do not have time. I seems to me quite likely she was the Sarah Pearch, (rounded down) age given as 65 in the 1841 census, who was living in Loganies Street in Old Street St. Luke's parish, i.e. quite near where the offence was committed.
(Despite the large number of Mary's who have been a Gotham by marriage, this seems to be the only one who was a widow and living (or likely to have been living) in the London area in 1809).
Died Aft 1809 - When, I think, a Bible was stolen from her.
