Notes - (Research):One Matthew Gotham of Sevenoaks married a Mary Osborn at Sundridge on 30 July 1812. He appears to have signed his surname as Githam, but as there seems to be no such surname and the banns at Sevenoaks, marriage at Sundridge and his subsequent burial at Sevenoaks all record his name as Gotham it seems reasonable to think that that is what it was.
This would seem to be the most likely Matthew. His age at death in 1837 was given as 47 when this one would have been 51; it seems close enough, especially as he was buried from the workhouse and the information may have been given by a staff member who was not well informed.
I need to investigate if there are parish overseers and / or workhouse records which may help.
Alternatively, in 1765 the burial of a foundling Georgiana Gotham was recorded in Westerham. Could another foundling have been given the name? - I need to investigate if there are records for the orphanage in Westerham, if there were other 'Gothams' and what might have become of them. It would be a coincidence, though, should they have chosen the Christian name 'Matthew' to use in combination with the surname 'Gotham' given that Gotham was a common name in one Gotham branch, at a time when Matthew was generally an uncommon Christian name.
