  • Name Samuel GOTHAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born 14 Jun 1789  No. 8, Upper Marylebone, Marylebone, London, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Date and place from baptism register
Baptised 29 Jun 1789  Providence Chapel (Independent), Grays Inn Lane, Marylebone, London, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location  [1
    • The person who baptised Samuel, William Huntington, seems to have been quite a character, from the information about him on this Wikipedia page about Lewes dissenters' chapel.
    Gender Male
    Residence 1821
    • A list of householders made for the 1821 census shows a Gotham in Upper Marylebone Street. I guess the person referred to was Samuel, as this was not only where he was born and the family's abode when his son was baptised in 1824. However, it could refer to his father; as I haven't a burial record for him I don't know if he was still living in 1821.

    Occupation Builder
    • Described as 'builder' on his son William's marriage certificate. This is the least reliable record, though, as people often wished to exagerate. William may have thought builder sounded better than decorator, or may have got it wrong; he was so young when his father died he is unlikely to have had any memories or first hand knowledge of him. The marriage PR entry for Samuel's son Samuel George gives his occupation as 'Bricklayer' - a more specific job within building, and clearly a humble occupation, whereas 'Builder' could be interpreted as having a building business.
    Occupation 1822
    Decorator
    • Recorded in a Baptism Register when his sons William and John were baptised - "Decr"
    Occupation 1824
    Trade
    • When his son Samuel George was baptised (in both registers)
