Family GOTHAM, d. Bef 1613 Married - While an Agnes Gotham (married name) was the mother of William and Edward (shown in the PR entries for their marriages), I am not sure if she was the one who married Thomas in 1560.
It seemed quite likely since:
- there is no Thomas or Agnes found paying the lay subsidy in Wolborough in 1581 - which could be explained by them living in Abbotskerswell (at least, by 1581);
However, against this:
- there is the burial of an Agnes in Wolborough in 1580, as a widow, so it appears both could have been dead by the time of the lay subsidy;
- the lack of burial of a Thomas could suggest that the husband of the Agnes buried in 1580 died before the start of the surviving PRs, but there are alternative possible explanations for the disappearance of Thomas;
- the dates of the marriages of William and Edward mean they must have married a few years older than average if they were sons of the Agnes who married in 1560;
- neither William nor Edward named a son Thomas (though the range of names they used shows how family names were not always used)
