John GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name John GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 30 Oct 1818 Deptford, Kent, England
- From Merchant Navy Seaman info. (more details to be added here)
Baptised 27 Dec 1818 St. Paul’s Church, Deptford, Kent, England
- From PR entry (transcribed data on FreeReg)
Gender Male Occupation 1880 Steward - Occupation given on passenger list when he emigrated to Australia.
Emigration 5 Apr 1880 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Arrival - John Goatham, aged 61, English, arrived in Australia on board the Chimborazo in 1880.
The arrival port is shown as 'Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia', I think meaning the ship called at all three. As John subsequently lived in Melbourne I am guessing that that is where he disembarked.
Residence 1888 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Residence Bef 10 Jun 1899 Brighton, Victoria, Australia
- From the admission book for Kew Hospital
Mental health From 10 Jun 1899 to 13 Aug 1901 Unit 7, Kew Hospital, Kew, Victoria, Australia
- Admission / discharge book entry shows that John's form of mental disorder was 'senile mania', with the supposed cause of 'Religion'; his bodily health was described as 'frail health' (the majority were described as 'fair health' upon admission). The field for 'duration of existing attack' was (unusually) left blank, and he was shown to have died in the hospital rather than being discharged. Under 'observations' was written 'Ch[urch] of England' and 'England'. I suspect the latter is the birthplace.
Occupation Mariner - Have more info.
Died 13 Aug 1901 The Lunatic Asylum, Kew, Victoria, Australia
- Year from the Australia Death Index, 1787-1985 (entries on Ancestry)
The age as well as the scarcity of the surname in Australia point to the death being of this John.
Data: Jno Gotham, died Kew, Victoria, aged 82, registered 1901, Victoria, registration no.: 16210 (on MyHeritage shown as 10210).
MyHeritage entry shows place of death as the Lunatic Asylum in Kew.
Actual date from the admission / discharge book for Kew Hospital.
Siblings4 brothers and 3 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
GOTHAM, d. Bef 1613 (5 x Great Grandfather)
Mary DANIEL, b. Est 1777, d. Aft 1830 (Age ~ 54 years) (Mother)
Notes - Probably the John who emigrated to Australia in 1880.
A note in his sister Eliza's workhouse admission in 1888 seems to confirm this - it shows she had a brother John in Melbourne.

But was it the marriage of this William to a Mary?
I am fairly sure it was; the date is appropriate and there is no sign of a William Gotham in Plymouth before this date or this couple afterwards.
Unfortunately the PR entry for the marriage does not give William's occupation, but the banns book might.

GRO ref: Goatham, John to GOWLLAND, Selina q4 1848 Kensington RD 3 328
Probably no children - if there were any born to the marriage they almost certainly died young. Selina was 40 when the couple married reducing the liklihood of children, and none is with Selina in any of the censuses.
