      John GOTHAM to Jone BUTLAND

      Is this marriage correct?
Marriages in Mevagissey for this period are not covered on the Cornwall OPC databse. Mevagissey is over 80 miles from Topsham, but if John was a mariner (as many in Topsham, once an important port, would have been) then maybe he and Joan moved to Topsham.

John was almost certainly related to the 'Gotha's of St. Ewe, the village being just 3 miles inland from Meavagissey. Strictly speaking it appears that St. Ewe was in Meavgissey parish, although it had its own Parish Registers from the C16th. The Gotha(m)s may have simply decided that one church was more convenient at some point, and may not have lived in either village, but elsewhere in the parish.

The Cornwall OPC database shows the following at St Ewe:
baptism of Temperence GOTHA, dau of William - 1634
baptism of Tristram GOTHA, son of William and Katherine - 1641
baptism of Thomas GOTHA, son of John - 1665
baptism of Thomas RUNDLE als GOTHA, son of John - 1667

Was the John, father of Thomas, this John in an earlier marriage?

On the other hand, John and Joan were both common Christian names; this could be chance - John's surname may be mistranscribed. But looking at the burial records on the Cornwall OPC website, 1685-1750, there were none for any names that could easily be written or mis-transcribed as Gotham.

And in Topsham I have found no entries for names such as Gotham / Gatam / Gatten until Susanna's baptism, though quite a number are found after than, with several in the 1680s. These variants are different to those found for Gothams elsewhere, and I have yet to explore the presence of similar names in Exeter, so it could be that John and Joan were from the nearby city rather than the Cornish coast.
