A list of people required to pay a lay subsidy in Ashburton for 1588 had no Gothams. I guess Thomas was not then living there, or was too young to be subject to tax and his parents were not there.
By 1599, though, a Thomas was listed when a rate was levied for the relief of the poor.
Maybe he had moved from Wolborough (Newton Abbot) - he may have been the Thomas baptised there in 1588.

Notes - (Research):There appear to have been 2 Thomases of a similar age, one in Staverton and one in Ashburton Parish. However, the one in Staverton had some family events take place in Asburton, probably because they were living in that part of Staverton Parish which was much nearer to Ashburton Church than to Staverton Church.
It is quite possible I have muddle some events and assigned them to the wrong Thomas.
With luck more research will provide more evidence so the events can be assigned with greater certainty.
