** That Christopher was the son of William is far from certain **

I have only come across 2 Christopher Gothams prior to the C20th, this one and one baptised in 1715.
The only Gothams I know of in Marledon were sons and grandchildren of William Gotham and his wife Mary nee Younge. Too young to be a son, I suspect Christopher was another grandson.
He could have been a son of several of William and Mary's sons. Having a son baptised in Marldon may suggest his father was John (Timothy being too young); however, since it was Thomas son of William who gave the name Christopher to a son and he was more likely to give the name of a brother or half-brother, I suspect this Christopher might have been the son of William. Perhaps he moved from Chudleigh to Marldon because his uncle John in Marldon had no sons.

The Civil Wars and Interregnum disrupted the normal keeping of registers, and some of the records of births etc. made during the latter were lost following the restoration. In Marldon there is no gap with years with no records such as is found in some parishes, but the years 1649, 50, 51 and also 1659 had far fewer births or baptisms recorded than was the norm in the parish; perhaps it was most likely that if baptised in Marldon it was in one of these years. However, if he was as I suggest the son of William he would most likely have been born and baptised in Chudleigh. Their register has plenty of births or baptisms for most of the Civil Wars / Interregnum years, but hardly any for the years 1653 and 1658, so he might have been born in one of those years.

    Married
    • Mothers name not recorded at time Hannah was baptised so it is possible she had a different mother. I do believe she was a daughter of this William as Gothams only seemed to live in Chudleigh from the arrival of this William.
Not finding the marriage of William to Joane (or any other wife) there could have been one or two children before Hannah.
A 'William Gadom' was buried in the parish in 1654. Although the name Gadden and similar can be found in Devon, it appears that none was in or near Chudleigh around this time.
This William's father was still in Abbotskerswell at the time of the protestation oath, but could have moved to Chudleigh by 1654, quite likely to live with his son in his old age. However, as there is a list entry for admon. for a William of Abbotskerswell being granted in 1648 it seems he probably died there. That suggests the William buried in 1654 could be son of this William. Although there seem to be plenty of baptisms recorded during most of the interregnum years, there were very few in a couple of years, including 1653, so it seems possible William, was born then. (The burial would not seem to be of a William who was a long standing resident in Chudleigh, as there is no William Gadom / Gotham or similar listed amongst those who took the protestation oath in Chudleigh in 1641).
