Name Thomas GOTHAM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1585 (possibly), Staverton, Devon, England - ** I am only guessing that Thomas might be the son of John **
(see research notes below)
Date estimated based on dates of baptisms of known children; however, since the registers only start in 1614 they may be the younger children of a larger family, and Thomas could be quite a few years older.
Gender Male Chancery Court case 1617 Accused of trying to dispossess Thomas Addiscott of land in Ashburton - Another of the defendants was William Horsham, so it seems likely the Thomas involved was this one, whose sister-in-law Barbara née Austen had remarried to Thomas Horseham. However, it is possible it was Thomas of Ashburton.
Occupation 1632 Staverton, Devon, England Clothier - When session rolls show that Hugh Deering(e) provided surety.
Occupation 1637 Ugborough, Devon, England Weaver - From Court of Chancery Case (C2/ChasI/S29/29)
Church role 1641 St. Peter’s Church, Ugborough, Devon, England Churchwarden Oath From 1641 to 1642 Ugborough, Devon, England Protestation Return - Thomas was Churchwarden when he signed the Protestation Return
As churchwarden he would have had to have appeared in person before the JP of Ermington Hundred to make the Protestation Oath in person. It was a declaration of his belief in the "Protestant religion, allegiance to the King and support for the rights and privileges of Parliament".
Those required to appear in person had then to go back home to their own parish where any two of them were to require the same oath of allegiance from all males over the age of 18. The names of all who refused to make the oath were to be noted and assumed to be Catholics.

Assessment 1647 Ugborough, Devon, England - The returns for the 1647 assessment survive for Ermington Hundred, including Ugborough, although not all names are legible.
Stoate's transcription includes an entry for ". . . . Golham 4[d]".
I suspect that this actually a Gotham, and this Thomas seems almost certainly the peson, since Stephen, there in 1641, was probably living in Plymouth by 1647.
Occupation 1651 Ugborough, Devon, England Yeoman - From Court of Chancery case (C10/11/65)
Buried 10 Aug 1660 St. Peter’s Church, Ugborough, Devon, England - From FMP

Half-siblings 1 half brother (family of John GOTHAM and Joyce ) Patriarch & Matriarch John GOTHAM, [? Forename Uncertain], b. Est 1520, Devon, England , d. Bef 1572 (Age ~ 51 years) (Grandfather)
Mary COLLARD, b. Est 1560, (possibly), Wolborough, Devon, England , bur. 12 Nov 1587, St. Mary the Virgin Church, Wolborough, Devon, England (Age ~ 27 years) (Mother)Notes - (Research):Wolborough and Staverton are about 6.5 miles apart; it may be that the Thomas bapt in Wolborough in 1588 is the one who had a family in Staverton, and there was also a Thomas baptised in 1568 in Stoke in Teignhead only 11 miles from Staverton; 1568 would make him a little old but far from impossible.
However, Staverton PRs only go back to 1614, but there were Gothams in the Parish before this time e.g. a John entered into a sale in 1619. It therefore seems likely that the Thomas was a different one, probably from a Staverton family, rather than either the Wolborough or Stoke in Teignhead one.
Since Thomas named a son John before he named one Thomas I suspect John may have been his father's name. Additionally, a yeoman named John of Staverton, probably the one involved in the 1619 sale, definitely had a son Thomas.
However, there was also a Thomas of Ashburton who seems to have been a similar age and named his first son John - I may have muddled this Thomas and that Thomas (or some of the events attached to them). From the marriages and children it is not possible there was just one.

The baptisms suggest that there were 2 children of Thomas were baptised about 3 months apart in Staverton. It's possible but seems unlikely this would be the case with siblings; were there 2 Thomases having a family in the parish at that time? The register does not seem to be a copy (each year is signed and the names / handwriting varies), and the entries are in order. Was an error made with the surname and one the child of a different Thomas? Or were they twins, the healthy one baptised in church, the sickly one at home and the date is a "received into church" date? All possibilities.
In particular I show this Thomas having a daughter with the unusual name Protesia, bapt 1623; a Thomas had a daughter bapt in Ashburton in 1618 named Parteza. Did the Ashburton Thomas live for a period in Staverton - were these 2 with the unusual name daughters of the same Thomas?
There was clearly at least the children of one Thomas being baptised in Stavertion before the marriage of this one to Susan Dewring (could be a child of the Ashburton Thomas).
In Staverton burial register for 1627 there is an entry:
"The Daughter of Thomas Goetham buried the _ viiith Febr:" - I don't know which daughter this was.
