Name John JEFFERSON Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 29 Nov 1767 St. Mary and St. Sexburga’s Church, Minster, Sheppey, Kent, England - From KFHS transcribed data (CD 16)
Shown as son of William and Mary
Gender Male Residence 1804 Queenborough, Sheppey, Kent, England - Shown as of Queenborough at the time of his marriage to Margaret Gotham
Occupation Ship Owner - Described as such when his son Matthew married in 1840.
Occupation 1804 Mariner - Master and owner of the sloop 'Prudent' at the time of his marriage
Died Between 1822 and 1841 - His wife was shown as a widow in the 1851 census, but John was not with her in 1841 so I guess he had died by then. As a mariner / ship owner, though, he could have been at sea.

Father William JEFFERSON, d. Yes, date unknown Mother Mary, d. Yes, date unknown Married - William and John are shown as the sons of William and Mary Jefferson (KFHS transcribed data for their baptisms).
However, a William married a Sarah Saffree in Minster on Sheppey on 1 Apr 1759. They appear to have had a daughter Lydy in 1760 and a son William in 1765, possibly the William who died in 1766.
Could William who was married to Sarah have remarried to Mary? I don't think so.
In 1774 a widow Sarah had an illegitimate child, and there is no burial of a Sarah in Minster until 1779. Many burials are shown to be of infants, children etc. so it seems most likely that the 1766 burial was not of the son of William and Sarah, but of William senior, the infant's father.
Hence I think we have two different couples.
There is no marriage of William to a Mary in Minster.
Was there a Jefferson link between this family and the Portsea / Gosport area before son John settled there for a few years?
A William who could have been this one married in Portsea in 1763 (to Mary Hunt).

Family 1 Jane SWIFT, bur. 25 May 1803, Holy Trinity Church, Queenborough, Sheppey, Kent, England Married 5 Nov 1791 Holy Trinity Church, Queenborough, Sheppey, Kent, England - From FamilySearch
No children found from this marriage. Although a Joanna Jefferson married a William Bishop (Eastchurch, 1820) and the children included a John Jefferson BISHOP, it is clear that Joanna was the daughter of William and Sarah Jefferson, (William most likely John's brother) and not of John and Jane (William names a daughter Joanna Bishop in his will - 1850, PCC).
