John George GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name John George GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 19 Sep 1796 (probably), West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- Date from baptism register
Baptised 30 Sep 1796 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- From img on FMP
Gender Male Occupation 1821 Mariner - John George was Captain of the schooner Freedom. Keith Matthews Name Files show it to be a 92 ton vessel built in Dartmouth in 1814, but the DHC (DRO) catalogue shows it to have been built at Teignmouth in 1821.
In July 1821 it was registered at Exeter, being owned by East Teignmouth shipwright, Arthur Owen and a Thomas Gotham. I'm not sure which Thomas this was - I think most likely this was John's brother of the name , though he would have been only 22; maybe it was their uncle. Though I don't know what became of him, he definitely survived infancy, but was possibly not still alive. The ship was later based at Liverpool.
In 1828 John George was captain of the Horatio, a 182 tons brig owned by Job, Bulley and Co. of St. Johns (Newfoundland) and Liverpool. (from Keith Matthews Name Files, Gotham file p.38).I have other information regarding the Horatio to add.
Poll Book entry 2 Nov 1840 Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Borough of Liverpool Common Council Elections - Entry in poll book (the last column has no header, but with the three values of blank, P or T clearly indicates how the individual voted).
Residence 1841 77, Vine Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
- With his wife Jane and one Hannah Oliver, aged 15 - I guess a servant, though no occupation shown. John was also recorded as of Vine Street in the
Occupation 1841 Mariner - From the census
Died 1842 On the brig Jane, Between Plymouth (England) and Lisbon, At Sea
- His death was recorded in deaths column of the Liverpool Standard and General Commercial Advertiser of 20 Dec 1842:
"On his passage from Calabar, Captain John Gotham, of the brig Jane, lamented by his friends."
There seems to be no death registration entry for him, presumably his body was committed to the deep rather than being returned to England.
Administration 4 Feb 1843 Archdeaconry Court of Chester, Cheshire, England
- 'heading' in left margin: "Gotham Sworn Under £450"
"4th. February Before Robt. Davies Surrogate
Admon of John George Gotham late of Liverpool in the
County of Lancaster Master Mariner deceased was Granted
unto Jane Gotham Widow the relict of the said deceased"
(from image on FMP, from the Cheshire Archives and Local Studies Service, Chester, England; viewed 23 Sep 2016)
FMP provide no way to see the start of the book, nor a reference but given that all other entries on the page or facing page were for people living in Chester Archdeaconry I think that was the Court in which the admon. was granted
Siblings3 brothers and 2 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
Andrew GOTHAM, b. Est 1585, (probably), Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
, bur. 10 Mar 1673/74, St. Mary the Virgin Church, Wolborough, Devon, England
(Age ~ 89 years) (4 x Great Grandfather)
Joan, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandmother)
Notes - I first thought it was probably this John who was married to Jane as I didn't know of another John of the right sort of age who it could be.
I am now sure that this John is the one who was married to Jane Tatham. Although Jane's will did not clarify this, due to only mentioning members of her own family, the fact that John was shown as 'John George' in the 1840 Poll Book which also shows he was living in Vine Street, and that John and Jane were living in Vine Street at the time of the 1841 census provides sufficient evidence.
