  • Name William GOTHAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Baptised 9 Jun 1776  All Saints’ Church, Combeinteignhead, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location  [1
    Gender Male
    Occupation Mariner
    • Recorded as such when his daughter Elizabeth married - but sometimes records like this do not mean that the father was still living and/or working.
    Occupation 1818
    Fisherman
    • When his daughter Elizabeth was baptised.
    Occupation 1821
    Sloop owner
    • A shipping register for the port of Exeter records that the 'Dove', a square-sterned sloop, built at Teignmouth in 1821, was owned by Thomas Boyd, William Gotham, Thomas Gotham.
I believe the last 2 must be this William and his brother Thomas.
    Died Between 1821 and 1827
    • His last child was baptised 1818, so he is unlikely to have died earlier than 1817. Probably after 1821, as I think he was the William who with a Thomas Boyd and Thomas Gotham was recorded as the owner of a sloop.
Not mentioned in the will of his aunt Elizabeth Gotham, written 1827, though 4 of his siblings were, which suggests he might have died by then (the other 4 of his siblings not left a bequest were 2 known to have died by then, and 2 of whom I know nothing beyond their baptism).
Hence I think he most likely (but not certainly) died between 1821 and 1827.

I did think I might have found him with Fanny recorded in the 1841 census - but recorded as Gatton. However, I don't believe it was them. Both are shown with a rounded down age of 60 - right, they were in Plymouth - possible, although Fanny was buried in Teignmouth, and shown then as living in Teignmouth. If they had moved to Plymouth it is possible she would have returned after William died. William Gatton in 1841 was shown as a labourer - possible. However, there are deaths for a William Geaton and a Fanny Geaton, both in Plymouth RD in 1848 (William aged 71, Fanny aged 75).
Geaton is a surname found in the Plymouth area so this is probably a completely different couple (to be investigated). There is a human tendency to try to create order; given that Geaton was a name found in the area and Gotham (at that time) was not, it could have been mis-interpreted. But so often? - in 1841, AND when both died? - I think this very unlikely.

It is clear that it was this William who married Johanna Bennett, as he was still living when his sister Elizabeth wrote her will in 1827, and she named him and also named several of his children.

I guess they may have got a licence to marry as quickly as they could, as the birth of their first child seemed imminent; she was born the day after the wedding!
