    • I expect Selina was placed by the parish (probably East Teignmouth) as a pauper apprentice.
      At the time of the 1841 census (6th June) she was living on the farm of farmer Samuel Furse.
      Guessing the relationships in the Furse family, it appears Samuel was with his wife, 4 daughters and 3 sons (aged 10 to early 20s) and 5 ag labs.
      Selina would probably have been used for domestic work and / or dairy work.
      It appears she was not happy there. On the 2nd October that year a notice appeared in Woolmer's Exeter and Plymouth Gazette:
      "Ran away from her Master, Samuel Furse,
      of Ashill, in the Parish of Bishopsteignton, his Ap-
      prentice, Angelina Gotham : she is 18 years of age,
      stout grown, with light complexion; - whoever harbours or
      employs the said Apprentice after this notice will be prose-
      cuted as the law directs.      Samuel Furse."
      (baptised Angelina GOTHAM, but no record for her with this name after this one; it seems safe to assume that for Angelina we can read Selina)

Robert might have been a labourer, but it suggests that they were comfortably off to be able to afford to have Susan, shown as aged 15 but possibly or almost 16, at school rather than out at work.

    Notes 
    • (Research):Where does Selina belong on the Gotham trees?
      It seems clear she is the person I did have as Angelina, daughter of Patience. The baptism PR entry does clearly say Angelina but it would seem to be a mistake in the register, or 'Selina' was considered an abbreviation or pet form of Angelina.

      Not only is there is no Selina GOTHAM amongst the baptism data transcribed by the DFHS (covers most people for this date but not free churches) but the date and place of baptism fit with Selina's birth, and there is no further signs of Angelina have been found after she ran away from her apprenticeship (i.e. no marriage or burial).
      Selina was a spinster at the time she married, and her father was not named; this ties in with 'Angelina' who was illegitimate.

      The clearet evidence, though, was a notice in the newspaper appealling for details of a run-away apprentice, Angelina Gotham in October 1841; the master and location were the master and location of Selina Gotham in the census in June 1841.

      To make matters confusing:
      In the St. Thomas RD of Exeter in Q1 1850 a Selina CASLEY married one Robert William OSBORNE.

      This couple were of similar ages to the Selina and Robert Osborn on this tree, though with different birthplaces, occupation and children. Despite the differences some have muddled these 2 couples.
