Andrew GOTHAM

-
Name Andrew GOTHAM Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1585 (probably), Abbotskerswell, Devon, England - Based on date of baptism of children, and given that his wife was a widow when he married her, he may have been a couple of years older than average at first marriage (average being about 28 for men at this time).
I am guessing that Andrew was probably born Abbotskerswell as
(1) so many Gothams lived there,
(2) Andrew was described as 'of Abbotskerswell' when he married and
(3) his first children were baptised there.
He could have been a son of Andrew and Margaret, mentioned in the answer to a Chancery Court dispute with John Tooley.
Gender Male Residence 1616 Abbotskerswell, Devon, England - At the time of his marriage, quite likely born in the parish and probably lived there until sometime between 1616 and 1622 (based on places where his children were baptised, though this was not always in the parish of residence).
Chancery Court case From 19 May 1618 Dispute with John Tooley of Brixham - According to John Tooley, a bond by which money was owed to William Jarman (former husband of Andrew's wife) had not been cancelled when the money was paid. A Peter Tooley and John Luke sought to take advantage of this, persuaded William Jarman to go along with the deceit. He claimed Andrew Gotham had at first seemed willing to cancel the bond, but was then allowing Peter Tooley and John Luke to proceed with their action against John Tooley.
In an answer Andrew and Elizabeth claim they do not know whether or not the money was paid to William Jarman, nor of the letter of atturney said to have been made by him. Strangely they say that John Tooley's arrest was not requested by them, but by an Andrew and Margaret Gotham. There is no information about who this couple were or why they might have wanted John Tooley arrested.

Residence 1632 Newton Abbot, Wolborough, Devon, England - The Chancery Court case of 1632 shows Andrew as then of Newton Abbot (mainly in Wolborough Parish, where Andrew seems to have been in 1641 or 2). He had probably moved from Abbotskerswell between the baptism of his first child in Abbotskerswell in 1616 and the baptism of another in Wolborough in 1622.
Occupation 1632 Newton Abbot, Wolborough, Devon, England Clothier - Given as his occupation in a Court of Chancery case
(TNA ref. C 2/ChasI/G1/25)
Chancery Court case 19 Jun 1632 Dispute with John Jarman re who owned what and money owed - Only a bill found, whether this was settled out of court (as I understand often happened) or whether other documents have gone missing I don't know.
A few months after the bill Andrew's wife died, leaving him with 4 children aged 1 to 16; possibly he was too busy after her death, possibly before during an illness that led up to it, and / or lost heart to pursue this case.
Oath Between 1641 and 1642 Wolborough, Devon, England Protestation Return - Transcription by A. J. Howard published in 1973, from transcription available in the DHC and published on the Devon Heritage website shows an Andrew GOTHAM took the oath in the parish of Newton Abbot and Wolborough; I think it was probably this Andrew.
The original listing is in the Houses of Parliament archive and images are online; the page with Andrew's signature can be viewed here.
It is worth noting that there are just 3 others recorded between him and a Thomas who I suspect was his son, suggesting they may have gone along together.
Interestingly one of those listed between them was a John Hayman, possibly a relation by marriage, as in 1572 widow Sidwell Gotham married Robert Hayman.
Occupation 1642 Newfoundland Involved with Newfoundland fisheries - Petition to House of Lords was signed by Andr Goteham - see transcription on this Newfoundland website
(n.b. note that it is the transcriber who has identified him as of Wolborough and Newton Abbot Parish, this is not in the original document. I think this is because this is the only Andrew he could find; it is also the only Andrew I know of who it could be. However it is quite possible that there was one or more other Andrews who could have been the fisherman involved, but who lived in a parish with PRs not surviving back this far and for whom there is no surviving evidence or at least none that I have discovered so far.)

Buried 10 Mar 1673/74 St. Mary the Virgin Church, Wolborough, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 2014)
"[March] 10th Was Buried Andrew Gotham"
I think the burial was probably this Andrew, but maybe I am missing the baptism of a younger one and burial of this one. There was an Andrew had a son baptised in Exeter in 1664 - could this burial be his?
However, admon. was granted for an Andrew of East Ogwell 1674 (list entry in Fry); if, as I guess he might be, the Thomas who had a family in East Ogwell was the son of Andrew, perhaps Andrew went to live with him in his old age, but was buried (possibly to be with his wife) in Wolborough.

Other Partners: William JARMAN m. Bef 16 Mar 1613/14Married Abt Feb 1615/16 - Date based on date of marriage licence.
The marriage is not in Abbotskerswell PRs. The PRs for Cockington only survive from 1632 and the BTs for 1615 and 1616 do not survive either.
Most likely the marriage took place in Cockington, or in Exeter when they went there to obtain a licence.
But, am I merging 2 Andrews?
There was a gap and change of place between Humfrey baptised in 1616 and Thomas in 1622. The two places are near each other, and I could be missing a baptism or two. Weight is added to the theory that the children were offspring of the same couple by the burial of an Elizabeth, wife of Andrew in Wolborough in 1632/3. I wondered if Andrew had had two wives both called Elizabeth, but there were a couple of Chancery Court cases involving the Andrew who married Elizabeth German/Jarman; looking at these confirms that Andrew's wife Elizabeth formerly Jarman who he had married in 1615/16 was still living in 1632 and that Andrew was then described as of Newton Abbot (i.e. was in Wolborough Parish), so it seems safe to conclude there was just one Andrew who fathered the children shown here and just one wife Elizabeth.
The earlier Chancery case, in 1618, does additionally refer to an Andrew and Margaret Gotham; I have not come across another mention of these, so they probably lived in a parish whose PRs do not survive from this time. There was an Andrew in Abbotskerswell at the time of the 1581 tax - was he the one who was married to Margaret?
Marriage License 12 Feb 1615/16 Exeter, Devon, England - Vivian shows a licence issued on 12 Feb 1615/16:
"Andrew Gotehman of Abbotskerswell and Eliza German of Cockington, widow"
Given that Andrew was of Abbotskerswell and the licence was about 10 months before the baptism of a first child of this couple I'm sure it must be for them, despite the mangled surname.
