Name Augustine (“Austen”) MURTON Suffix [ONS gp] [Parents?] Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1525 - A rough estimate based on my estimate of the dob of his daughter Joan.
Assuming he was the son of Nicholas, he must have been between 1521 and 1534 as under 13 when his father died (from Chancery bill) and named in his father's will. Last son named so may well have been the youngest.
It seems reasonable to supppose he was the son of Nicholas: Nicholas clearly had a son with the name, who was of about the right age, and he lived in Graveney, i.e. close to Boughton under Blean. However, the scarcity of documents from this date, and also of indexes to the few that do survive, means that if there had been more than one Augustine Murton of a similar age (as there were Augustine Hills born about a century later) it is unlikely I would find references to the other(s).
Gender Male Bequest Aft 1534 In his father's will - Augustine's father left him:
"the corn[er] hous yn Graveney the whiche I p[u]rchaced of maist[er] John Marten", to be delivered to him when he reached the age of 21.
Although no land was mentioned in his will, it is clear from the Chancery Court case that Augustine could also have inherited land under gavelkind.
Godchildren From 1582 to 1613 All Godsons called Austen - By 'from 1582 to 1613' I mean he became Godfather to those he named in that range of years; of course he remained a Godfather to the time of his death.
He named 4 Godchildren in his will, Austen Hills, Austen Tilson and Austen Car the elder and younger.
Austen Hills must be his grandson, son of his daughter Joan, baptised in 1582. Although the name was given to two great grandsons they were not born when Augustine died.
Austen Tilson must be his great grandson, son of his eldest grandchild, Mary Tilson née Hills, baptised in 1605. The Tilson family lived, like Augustine, in Boughton under Blean so he would have been able to enjoy seeing a great grandson reach the age of 9.
Austen Car the elder and younger must be another grandson and great grandson with that name, the son and grandson of his daughter Marie. The younger was only baptised in 1613 so Augustine would only have known him as a baby.
Witness 1595 To the will of his son-in-law Hercules Hills Executor 1599 Of his son-in-law Laurence Brooke's will - Laurence was one of four sons-in-law that Augustine outlived: three husbands of his daughter Joan, one of his daughter Marie.
Probate Inventory 1614 Occupation to 1614 Pointmaker - According to his will he was a pointmaker.
In that same will he also metions house, orchard and land. It seems common, perhaps the norm, for people to have farmed on a small scale when they also had other occupations.
It is not clear, though, whether Augustine did farm himself or let that land to others. His probate inventory mentions no husbandry implements, nor livestock. On the other hand, given his age, perhaps he had passed them on to others or sold them. Where land was 'owned' but occupied by others wills often name the occupier; there is no such mention in Augustine's will. Of course it is not easy to know how often there was an occupier but they were not mentioned, but the omission may indicate that the land was being farmed within the family.
