  • Name Augustine HILLS
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Abt 1582
    • Shown as '40 and upwards' when he married in 1625, but as about 44 when he married in 1626,
Baptised 30 Sep 1582  Ss. Peter and Paul’s Church, Boughton under Blean, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

"The same Daie ['the last of Septebr'] was bapt Austen Hills the sonne of Hercules Hills"
    Gender Male
    Bequest 1631
In his grandfather Augustine Murton's will
    • As a grandchild, Augustine was left 40 shillings by his grandfather; as a Godchild, Austen was left an additional 4 shillings by his Godfather. However, these payments were to be paid out within a year of his cousin Austen Carr receiving Augustine Murton's house and land etc., and this was only to happen after Augustine Murton's daughters had both died. This didn't happen until 1631.
    Godfather Augustine Murton, his grandfather
    • His grandfather named 4 Godchildren in his will, all named Austen and including "Austen Hills". Although Hills great grandsons were given the name they were born after Augustine Murton died, so it must be this Augustine Hills, his grandson, who was his Godchild.
    Will 26 Jun 1651
    Written
    • The register copy of the will gives the date as 26 June 'one thowsand six hundred and one'. This makes no sense, Augustine names the wife he married in 1626 and children, including their spouses, who married after this. I suspect the word 'fiftie' was accidentally omitted. However, it is possible it was a different year and therefore caution is needed assuming who was living in 1651 on the basis of this will.

    Other Partners: Laurence BROOKE  m. 26 Jan 1595/96;   Edmund GOFFE  m. 26 Jan 1606/07;   Nicholas JUCE  m. 20 Jan 1611/12
    Married Bef 1580
    • Estimate of date assumes all Hercules' children were Joan's. If Mary wasn't then they must have married about 1581.

Hercules' wife at the time of his death was Joan; whether she was the mother of all of his children I am not certain, although her children named in her father's will shows that at least all from Augustine on were - i.e. all those known of except Mary (each was to receive 40 shillings). By contrast Hercules' daughter Mary (unlike the others not described as Joan's daughter, but simply as the wife of Laurence Juce was only to receive 10 shillings). Augustine Murton's Godchildren did include Augustine Tilson, one of this Mary's sons by her first marriage. If Mary had lost her mother early in life I guess that Joan and Joan's father could have played a big enough part in Mary's life for her to choose her step-grandfather as a Godfather for her son and (as seems to have been the norm) to have given her son the name of a Godparent, in this case Augustine. Mary had married by the time the will was written, and she may well have received less because her grandfather had given her her portion at the time of her marriage, though two of Joan's three sons had also married before the will was written.
Boughton under Blean marriages in the PRs survive from 1558; the fact that Hercules and Joan's is not there suggests they probably married elsewhere, although it could have been accidentally omitted. If Hercules had been married before the PRs could also be expected to have his previous marriage, unless that too were elsewhere, and his first wife's burial - could have been elsewhere but less likely. No Hills were buried between the baptism of Hercules' children Mary and Augustine, further suggesting that Mary was Joan's daughter.

Shows "Austen Hilles & Clemys Freinde maryed iiid" - under heading 'October'
It seems a little surprising that Augustine should marry a bride from Ash, about 15 miles from where he grew up. Did he work there before moving on to St. Lawrence? Although nearer to St. Lawrence, Ash is about 8 miles away so unless he did it still seems surprising they should meet / be introduced - unless there was a family link. Clemys was a rare name, althogh several were baptised or married in Ash in the late C16th. Besides Clemys FREIND these included Clemys HYLS, baptised in 1590. Was this a co-incidence, or were both girls given the name Clemys because they were related, and was Clemys HYLS also related to Augustine? (Her father was named George, no obvious link to Augustine but could have been a cousin or even an uncle).
