    Occupation Pilot
    • From probate inventory
    Buried
    • No sign of a burial of Richard, but a John Sladden was buried in Deal on 26 Aug 1694. Could this have been Richard with an error in the Christian name? It being just 9 days before his goods were apprised suggests it could, but it appears that John's wife was a widow by 1696/7, as it seems she remarried then. Perhaps both died at about the same time, not uncommon in families when fatal infectious diseases were common. Since both were mariners another possibility is that they were casualties of work at sea; this could explain the lack of an entry for Richard, as it could be that John's body was recovered but Richard's wasn't.

      PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Jan 2020) shows:
      "Jno Sladden bu _ Do [Aug:st] 26"
      A death at sea (or other sudden death) could explain why he seems to have left no will.

    Notes
    • Was the Richard who married Cicely Bedlake the son of Thomas bap. 1636?
      Summary: from evidence in wills I think we can be sure he was (evidence at the end of what follows) but here is my research that preceded coming to this conclusion.

      Several facts suggest he might not be:
      - Occupation - his father was a yeoman but he was a mariner;
      - Age at marrige - in the Early Modern period the average age for men to marry was 28; he can have been aged no more than 24;
      - Younger than wife (about 6 years).
      However, none of these facts are exceptional and even collectively far from rule the son of Thomas out as the Richard who married Cicely.

      In favour of the two being the same:
      Only one other possible bap found - Richard Slayton in Sandwich, 1621.
      (Searching FMP on 16 Jan 2020; most but not all baptisms indexed)

      There is no likely alternate marriage and family for the other Richard, and Henry, father of Sandwich Richard was a 'marrinder' (recorded in burial register).  This made Richard Slayton seem a real possibility, but further research into the Slayton family I believe rules him out.

      How significant is the name being Slayton not Sladden?
      It seems possible the names have the same root; I have seen nothing to either confirm or refute this.
      But by this time a glance at index entries suggests that they were generally distinct - Slayton mainly Sandwich and Thanet, Sladden further south. However I think it is certainly possible that someone with the name Slayton arriving where the name Sladden was known but not Slayton would have been recorded as a Sladden, but I think it unlikely the name would thence forward have consistently Sladden unless he were illiterate. Richard baptised in Sandwich had several siblings, Henry (bur 1622 as Slayton), Thomas (bap 1623) and Robert (bap 1631 - transcribed data shows he was recorded as Slaydon), John (1628-37, bur as Slayden), Elizabeth (1634, Slayden) - all children of Henry and Sara (Sara bur 1637, Henry bur 1644, both as Slayden).
      Beyond Sandwich - Henry and Sara married in Ash - Slayton. Robert's widow Alice from Sandwich remarried in Eastry - Slayton in marr licence and PR. This is despite some events being where there were Sladden events around the same time; the two names were not confused.

      Robert left a will and signed it - Slayton; if he could sign his name it seems likely that Richard would have been able to as well. In addition, Richard of Deal's son signed his will in a confident hand - Sladden.

      Naming patterns
      It is interesting that Richard of Deal named a son John, but there is no evidence of a Thomas (his father's name if he were the one from Walmer) or Henry (if from Sandwich). Since there could have been others during the period for which PRs don't survive and before John would have been during the interregnum when there were no ATs or BTs we can't really read anything into names not apparently used, just what was used. It is known that children were often given the names of Godparents, and Godparents were often close relations. John may well have been from the uncle of Richard of Walmer; no obvious John in the Sandwich family.

      Location
      - Sandwich only c. 6 miles, but Walmer effectively part of Deal. Has to make Walmer Richard more likely but only partly so - and only if his parents stayed in the parish throughout his younger years.

      All this seems to make it clear the names of these particular Slayton family of Sandwich and Sladden family of Walmer / Deal are unlikely to have been confused.

      More conclusive evidence was found subsequent to the above analysis in two wills, especially the second:

      Samuel Shepherd - witness to will
      Richard's uncle William Sladden had a grandson-in-law Samuel Shepherd, and a great grandson with the same name. It was probably one of these who witnessed the will of Mary, wife of Richard's son Richard, I think most likely Samuel senior, Mary's second cousin-in-law.
      (the relationship between Mary and the two Samuels can be seen here - this also shows where John who wrote the will (below) fits).

      Will of John Sladden 1740
      That there was close contact between the families of brothers William and Thomas (Richard's father) is also evidenced by William's son leaving a bequest:
      "... to my Cosen Mary Sladden Daughter of Richard Sladden of Deal one Guinea ...".
      Cosen is of course an imprecise term, especially in the past, but would seem here to refer to a 1st cousin twice removed. In any case it provides a clear link between the family of Richard of Deal and that to which John of Great Mongeham belonged, i.e. links the Deal family to the Lyminge Sladden / Slodden family.

    Married
    • The marriage of Richard and Cicely probably took place during the interregnum, and any record of it probably among the many lost from that period. There may also have been one or more other childrens whose baptisms are also lost, but since their son Richard and his descendants are the only beneficiaries of Cicely's will it seems probable if there were any neither they nor any children they may have had survived Cicely.
