    Notes
    • Who was Mary Dash and what became of her?
It is probably easiest to try to find her in later life and work back - a marriage or burial might given her age, and hence her (approximate) date of birth.
I am assuming, for the moment, that she was a singlewoman when her daughter Mary was born but of course it is possible that she was a widow, or even married but her husband long absent.

If she did not subsequently marry she could have been the Mary DASH buried in Aldingbourne in 1837, described as 'of Oving'. Her age was given as 88 so she was probably born in 1748, and hence would have been about 18 when Mary Broadbridge DASH, an age to make her a possibility. (burial data on SFHG db)

Many, probably most, mothers of illegitimate children went on to marry. Date-wise the most likely marriage on the Sussex Marriage Index is one in Aldingbourne in 1772, to William Peachey. The SMI has no details (e.g. no marital status, occupation or witness names, nor whether the couple could write) so seeing this entry to get the extra info. is a priority. This is perhaps made more likely since it is clear that this Mary's granddaughter, Rachel, subsequently married a William Peachey.
(Care is needed not to confuse William and Mary née Dash with William Peachey of Pagham who married as a bachelor in 1773 to Mary Peachey; it is clearly the latter who left a will, written 1797, two codicils added later, proved in the PCC in 1809).
