    Clerk at Salcombe District Church
    • Recorded at the time his daughter Margaret was baptised but quite likely for a much longer period.
The Parish Clerk was the person who assisted in services, leading the singing (or saying) of the responses, psalms etc.
He was also invovled in preparing the church for services, and contacting the priest where people wanted baptisms etc. if the priest was not present in the parish.
Salcombe was not a parish, but part of Malborough Parish, which is presumably why John was described as Clerk at the District Church, rather than a Parish Clerk. It was usually a role for life, so John may have been the Clerk for over 40 years.
Because leading the responses meant the clerk needed to be able to read at least, most could also write and to them was sometimes deputed the keeping of the registers. Even when they did not help with this they often signed as witnesses to marriages, especially when most people could not write. (I have not looked at Salcombe to see what John did; by the time he was clerk more would have been able to sign their name).
