Notes - With her Forbes grandparents at the time of the 1851 census. These match Amelia Forbes parents, making it clear that Clara was a sister of Mary. In the 1860s a marraige with a deceased sister's husband (and vice versa) was still illegal, because legally a spouses siblings were considered to be the persons siblings, and hence such a union would be incest. (However, such relationships were generally accepted, by family, friends and neighbours etc. and considered preferable to a couple living together unmarried)
Legally though, Clara was not married to Thomas, which could have had an impact on inheritance, settlement etc., had the situation been noticed.
