Mother Elizabeth ?,   b. Est 1336,   d. Yes, date unknown
    Married
    • When William died he left a widow Elizabeth.
      There are two questions, though
      1. Was she the mother of (anyof) his children?
      2. What was Elizabeth's birthname?

It seems that William's wife may have been Elizabeth Criol. Her family look interesting so I would like to think so. However, I have also seen a suggestion that she was William's second wife, so even if true she may not be Joan's mother and my ancestor.
Even amongst gentry / nobility, determining any ancestor's mother this far back is usually more difficult (more likely not to be possible) than establishing the father, since men (and boys) are recorded in so mnay more records than women (and girls). Determining the mother of a female ancestor is particularly difficult / likely to be impossible.
I hope though I may find something that at least gives a significant pointer as to who Joan's mother might be, even if it doesn't clearly establish her identity.

Having glanced at transcriptions of some info. concerning her dower, after the death of her husband, it may be significant that there seems to be none referring to her husband's son William as her son, and that he seems to have acted contrary to her interest; both seem more typical as the action of a step-son.
