Sir Stephen COBHAM, The Elder
Set As Default Person -
Name Stephen COBHAM Prefix Sir Suffix [ONS gp] The Elder Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1295 Gender Male Honours 1306 Knighted - According to Bellewes, but shown as in 1326 in Shorne Woods Archaeology Group website article. A typo in one of the articles? OR was one date the knighting of his brother Stephen?
Property 1309 Hever Manor, Hoo Hundred, Kent, England
- Granted to Stephen by his parents.
I don't know if this was before his mother inherited Allington; if so it might have been to provide a separate home for Stephen and his wife.
Residence to 1324 Rundale, Shorne, Kent, England
- The Shorne Woods Archaeology Group suggests that it is believed that Stephen lived at Rundale until his mother's death when he inherited Allington.
However it points out that he retained a link after that date, as he was granted a license for a chapel there in 1329, and signed a deed there in 1330.
Residence From 1324 Allington Manor, Allington, Kent, England
- After his mother's death.
Died 1332 Inquisition Post Mortem 1333

Father Sir Henry COBHAM, b. Est 1265, d. Abt 1316 (Age ~ 51 years) Mother Joan OF PENCHESTER, b. Bef 1269, d. 1324 (Age ~ 55 years) Married - Bellewes only mentions the one wife of Henry, but the Shorne Woods Archaeology Group website refers to Joan as Henry's second wife.
If he did marry twice, whose were the children?
The name Stephen may suggest they were sons of Joan of Penchester, as her father was called Stephen, although maybe as there were two sons Stephen one was the son of each of two wives.
Bellewes refers to Stephen the younger's mother Joan, as daughter of Stephen of Penchester, granting to him by fines, subject to the payment of life annuities to herself, the manors of Rodmeregge and 'l'unstall, in 1323 (possibly from the Calendar of Close Rolls, p. 683? - or is that citation only for Stephen and his wife being alive in 1342?).
The Shorne Woods Archaeology Group does refer to Stephen the elder as the son of Joan, and Bellewes comments on him having taken his mother's arms, so I will assume he was the son of John, for the moment at least.
