    • Bellewes only mentions the one wife of Henry, but the Shorne Woods Archaeology Group website refers to Joan as Henry's second wife.
If he did marry twice, whose were the children?
The name Stephen may suggest they were sons of Joan of Penchester, as her father was called Stephen, although maybe as there were two sons Stephen one was the son of each of two wives.
Bellewes refers to Stephen the younger's mother Joan, as daughter of Stephen of Penchester, granting to him by fines, subject to the payment of life annuities to herself, the manors of Rodmeregge and 'l'unstall, in 1323 (possibly from the Calendar of Close Rolls, p. 683? - or is that citation only for Stephen and his wife being alive in 1342?).
The Shorne Woods Archaeology Group does refer to Stephen the elder as the son of Joan, and Bellewes comments on him having taken his mother's arms, so I will assume he was the son of John, for the moment at least.
