Family 2 William MUSCHAMP, Esq., b. 10 Aug 1480, d. Abt 1542 (Age 61 years)
Other Partners: Elizabeth HARMONDE; Agnes SCOTT m. Bef 1520Married Est 1506 - William was married more than once, and the Collectanea topographica et genealogica ('CTG') and The visitations of the county of Surrey ('Surrey vis') disagree about which wife was the mother of William, while a number of children are not assigned a mother by either source.
Surrey vis. shows Elizabeth Sands as the mother of Raffe and John.
A book "Collections Illustrative of the Geology, History, Antiquities, and Associations of Camberwell and the Neighbourhood", by Douglas Allport, published in 1841 agrees with the Surrey vis, saying on p.153
"An old pedigree in the British Museum, gives this account ...
"William Muschamp, of Camberwell, in co' Surr' maried to his 1 wife, the da: of Scott, but had no issue by her." By "the wydowe of Nynnes," his second wife, he had two sons, Rafe and John; and by his third lady, who is described as "da : of Harman," he had "four more, Richard, Edward, Thomas, and Xpofer, or Christopher, ..."
I am following this for the moment, for the sons, and assigning the daughters according to where they fall within the sequence of sons. However the account misses 3 sons given in the list of births, two Williams and a Francis. Francis and the older William probably died in infancy; Francis and the younger William can be assigned a mother according to their birth dates, but the older William as well as one daughter Mary were born between the sons assigned in Allport. Mostly both of William's wifes Elizabeth had one child a year, at least for the first few years of marriage. However, between John (son of Elizabeth Sands) and the older William there was about a 3 year gap, and another similar gap between the older William and Mary. One of these is probably due to the gap between William being widowered and remarrying. It seems most likely that this was the second gap, the first may have been due to Elizabeth Sands' health declining. Since neither the older William nor Mary had children if I have assigned them wrongly it doesn't make anyone else's ancestors wrong. Since all sources show Elizabeth Sands, alias the 'widow Nynnes' as the mother of John I hope I am correct in showing her as my 12 x great grandmother.
CTG shows Elizabeth's surname as Sandys, and mother of Raffe, Christopher, John, William and Edith.
I hope there may be surviving wills or other documents for members of the wives families which may clarify this.
